Makrochem

Hot Melt Adhesive Manufacturer

An Alternative to Dispersion Adhesives – Hot Melt Adhesives from Makrochem

Both dispersion adhesives and hot melt adhesives are used in the packaging industry, printing, furniture manufacturing, and crafts, delivering excellent results in a wide range of applications. However, they have different properties, which means that the choice of the right adhesive should depend on the specific requirements of the project and the conditions in which it will be used.

Our range includes hot melt adhesives in various forms, such as:

  • Hot melt adhesive sticks
  • Hot melt adhesive granules
  • Hot melt adhesive pillows
  • Hot melt adhesive blocks

Our hot melt adhesives are characterized by fast performance, strong bonds, and versatility, making them an indispensable tool in everyday production processes.

Key Differences Between Dispersion Adhesives and Hot Melt Adhesives:

1. Chemical composition

  • Dispersion adhesives: Based on water-based polymer dispersions. They do not contain solvents, making them less harmful to the environment.
  • Hot melt adhesives: Contain thermoplastic polymers that melt at high temperatures. Upon cooling, they form strong bonds.

2. Application method

  • Dispersion adhesives: Applied in liquid form and require time to dry and cure.
  • Hot melt adhesives: Applied in a molten state and solidify quickly after application, allowing for immediate use.

3. Drying time

  • Dispersion adhesives: Drying time can range from several dozen seconds to several hours, depending on the adhesive and the bonded material.
  • Hot melt adhesives: Solidification takes from a few seconds to several minutes, significantly accelerating the production process.

4. Applications

  • Dispersion adhesives: Often used in applications requiring flexibility, such as bonding paper, textiles, or wood.
  • Hot melt adhesives: Ideal for bonding materials that need to be joined quickly, strongly, and permanently, such as demanding packaging applications or decorative elements.

5. Resistance to external conditions

  • Dispersion adhesives: May be less resistant to moisture and high temperatures after drying.
  • Hot melt adhesives: Characterized by greater resistance to high temperatures and chemicals, making them more versatile in demanding conditions.

Applications of Makrochem Hot Melt Adhesives

  • Packaging and cardboard boxes – fast closing and bonding of cartons.
  • Paper bags and sacks – hot melt adhesives for paper bag production.
  • Bookbinding and finishing – adhesives for book spines (see: bookbinding adhesives).
  • Pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA) – permanently tacky hot melts for labels and tapes (see: pressure-sensitive adhesives).

Hot Melt Adhesives with Professional Technical Support

As the manufacturer of the MakroMelt brand, we provide batch-to-batch consistency, technological support, and hot melt selection tailored to specific applications.

With over 20 years of experience in industrial adhesives, we understand the realities of production - we don’t just supply granules.

What Are Hot Melt Adhesives?

A hot melt adhesive is a thermoplastic adhesive applied hot - supplied in solid form (granules), it is melted in an applicator, applied at high temperature, and bonds rapidly as it cools. It contains neither water nor solvents, allowing the bond to form in a fraction of a second. This is a fundamental difference compared with dispersion adhesives, which need to evaporate water.

Types of Hot Melt Adhesives in Our Range

We offer hot melt adhesives in several groups, selected according to the application and substrate:

  • EVA adhesives – based on ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer; versatile, suitable for packaging and bookbinding.
  • Polyolefin (PO) adhesives – higher thermal and chemical resistance, designed for demanding industrial applications.
  • Pressure-sensitive adhesives (PSA) – remain permanently tacky and bond under pressure; suitable for labels, tapes, and repositionable applications.

We most commonly supply adhesives in granule form, which is convenient for dosing and storage. Parameters such as application temperature, open time, and viscosity are selected according to the machine and substrate.

Hot Melt vs. Dispersion Adhesives - When to Choose Which

  • Hot melt - when line speed and immediate grab are critical, for bonding non-absorbent substrates, and when no drying time is desired.
  • Dispersion adhesive - when a longer setting time is acceptable and you need a quiet, cost-effective, and safe bond for paper/cardboard.

Not sure which one to choose? Selecting the right adhesive for your production is key to success - send us your line parameters, and we’ll advise you and provide samples.

Together, let’s create a lasting solution.
